The Multitude of Supermarket Jobs

For young people looking for their first job, supermarket jobs are a great place to start. There is a wide variety of departments to work in and different levels of jobs within those departments. There are positions available for a wide range of people looking to serve the general public.

The one position that has the most contact with the customer is the cashier. Although they are one of the last people seen, the cashier not only has the job of ringing up the customer, but to provide a "come back anytime" attitude. It can seem a little overwhelming for a new cashier, especially during busy times and around the holidays. It is important to remember to stay calm and be quick, not flustered and rushed.

Baggers and the stock crew sometimes are one in the same. Although there are some people who do strictly one or the other job, there are others who float between the two. Baggers are important but get little credit. It is their job to make sure all your groceries are bagged efficiently and safely. Sometimes they will help take the cart out to your car with you and load everything into your vehicle. The stock crews job is to make sure products are filled and neatly displayed on the shelves and racks. This keeps the store looking neat and organized.

There are different levels of jobs in the meat department. Workers start off as trainee meat cutters, then meat cutters, and then the managers. It is the job of the meat and seafood department to make sure their products are fresh and stocked. Occasionally these associates may be able to offer up tips on how to prepare certain cuts of meat and other dishes.

A produce worker has the job of making sure their department is fully stocked and fresh. They also have the ability to create special order trays for customers. These are great for parties and other special occasions. In some stores, these associates also assist with floral arrangements and balloons.

The bakery has many positions too. Aside from management, there are bakers making the breads, rolls, and other tasty treats. The cake decorators are specially trained to make beautiful cakes. Sometimes simple in appearance, other times very elaborate, large, and delicately detailed. Bakery workers also make sure their department in full in stock and fresh.

Aside from the cashiers, the deli department can be one of the most busiest in the store. Many people rely on the deli worker for their lunch meat and cheese. Unlike the other departments that have everything set out for the customer to choose from, the majority of the deli is based on the customers requests and special orders on certain meats and cheeses cut a specific thickness and to equal a certain weight. Although some delis do provide items like fried chicken and side salads that are prepared ahead of time for the customer to walk up and grab.

Supermarkets are full of a variety of jobs. Although some people see it as a good starter job, many people go on to make long careers out of it. If you work hard, an entry level employee may someday work their way up to Store Manager or higher.
