Interviews are stressful enough without the added pressure of having to make sure you use the correct pronunciation, tone, grammar and follow the formalities of the English spoken language. If you are originally from a different culture or background in an English speaking country fighting for your rightful place up the corporate ladder but without much success then you are not alone.
You may have managed to get an interview because of your resume which highlights your achievements and relevant skills and qualifications. The employer likes it and invites you to an interview to find out more. The only problem, he or she does not understand you and concludes that you do not have a good command of the English language and therefore do not meet one of the critical criteria of the job role - good communication skills.
I have worked with many clients who have come to me because of their inability to effectively and confidently articulate their skills and attributes. Time and time again they have missed out on positions because of their language skills and many of them eventually give up hope and decide they should not even try to advance within their organizations or chosen career path. It was Nelson Mandela who said, "There is no passion to be found in playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living". Think about what is possible and focus on that - there is always a way and there is always someone who can help.
The strategies I use with my clients to improve their communication so they can compete strongly and on more even ground has a lot to do with confidence. When a person is nervous, it is more difficult to think clearly and convey a message. The first thing to do is to try and understand your fear or nervousness. Applicants for whom English has never been their first language become different people when they have to communicate in English, particularly in a testing situation like an interview. They lose their confidence, doubt their abilities and they try and avoid too much conversation in the fear that they will be ridiculed or asked to repeat themselves over and over again. Unfortunately, there are many 'lazy' listeners in the world today. Everyone is in a rush and does not want to spend the time trying to understand or get to know someone with an accent that distracts from what they are trying to say. We have to assume that the interviewer is the same. He or she may have a dozen or more candidates to interview in a week and they do not want to work to understand what it is an applicant is saying.
Once we have determined the degree to which language is the barrier to them interviewing successfully, I work with them to build their confidence in the language. We use language to bring out their true personalities and build their confidence through improved focus and fluency.
It is important for candidates who find it difficult to communicate in a second language to work with a coach or a trusted friend to understand exactly what the interviewer is asking, the nuances behind the language and how to structure simple, but effective answers to commonly asked questions. Work out what your key strengths and personal traits are and develop a personal statement which is unique to you. A coach will help you understand how to make clear statements that immediately capture the attention of the interviewer.
Identify the key job criteria that they are looking for applicants to fulfill - these could be things like: good communication, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, good attention to detail, proven negotiation skills and so on. Develop questions based on these criteria and then structure answers so they are manageable and they make sense to you. It is very difficult to sell something you do not believe in, that is why, it is absolutely essential you understand what you are communicating and that it makes sense to you. Work with a friend or coach to fully understand the meaning behind the questions so your answers are relevant and address the question being asked.
Prepare answers to tricky questions such as 'what is your greatest weakness?' or things in your resume which may be perceived as 'negative'. This could be a gap in your employment history or the fact that you were made redundant. Write down answers to these questions, get them reviewed by someone with good communication skills and practice, practice, practice.
With many of my clients, after we have addressed their fears, understood their motivations, prepared a long list of written questions and answers and ensured they have a full understanding and a strong belief in what they are saying, I tape myself answering the questions. They use this tape to improve their pronunciation by listening to my voice and tone on the way to and back from work on the train and whenever they have spare time to practice. This has been an invaluable strategy and the improvement from one session to the next is remarkable. They have to however, put in the time and effort and be prepared to work hard.
Presentation and grooming, being punctual and being fully aware of interview etiquette are also part of being properly prepared. Sometimes there are also cultural issues or social "norms" that need to be addressed as part of the interview process. Get the appropriate advice on what to wear - it is always better to be more conservative and wear a suit or at least a business jacket. Use eye contact throughout the interview and engage the interviewer. If language has been an issue in the past, do not rush through what you need to communicate. Slowing down will produce a much clearer message and ensure the interviewer does not miss out on hearing all your positive qualities.
Life is often testing. We have to prove we have the strength, confidence and conviction to realize our goals. Some people are born with a natural ability to communicate, engage an audience and capture positive attention. Tip No. 1: Take An Objective, Not an Emotional Look, At Where You've Come From
Thomas Edison believed there were no such things as mistakes, only eliminated options that brought him one step closer to his goal. There is no such thing as "failure," he claimed, only lessons to be learned.
Most people find it difficult to see a failure in an analytical, impartial fashion; many of us were raised to believe that if we failed at something, we were failures. Therefore, as adults, we take failure personally, believing our lack of success indicates a lack in our character. Instead, we must look at the situation objectively, as a matter of cause and effect. The fact that we fail in business situations does not mean we are failures, but rather that we didn't create the right cause to achieve the desired effect.
If you find yourself in a stuck emotional state, go back and analyze the steps you took and see what you might have done differently. Remove the emotional involvement; just look at the raw data. Logically and dispassionately examine the course you chose and determine why it did not yield the result you wanted, and then consider why it was not appropriate for that particular situation. Tip No. 2: Focus on the purpose on the other side of the pain.
Happiness does not come from the elimination of pain, but from the realization of your purpose. Keep reminding yourself why you are doing what you're doing. Even less lofty purposes, such as "I just work here to pay the rent and my car payment," can be transformed over time if you look at the higher purpose for why you might be there. Perhaps you will make contacts that will help you in the future. Perhaps you are trying to save money to put your kids through college. The key is to look beneath the surface to find the spiritual meaning.
To succeed, you'll need to look at the higher goals you've set and determine their importance, then focus on what is good, important, and meaningful to you, rather than on the mundane aspects or the things you hate about your job. If you develop a strong enough reason or purpose to keep going, and you can focus on that purpose, you will succeed at each of the steps you take toward your goal. Without a sense of purpose, you will lack motivation and consciously or subconsciously doom yourself to failure.
Tip No. 3: You can't see the whole parade from where you stand.
You never know from where you stand whether what you are experiencing will turn out to be good or bad until enough time has passed. A seemingly hopeless situation may be exactly the disaster you fear, but it may also turn from catastrophe into triumph in ways you are unable to predict.

Tip no 4: It's not whether you have won or lost in the past; it's the person you have to become in order to win in the future.
After a business failure has led you to analyze the objective data of your experience, you then need to look at the kind of person you need to become to see the results you want in the future. Beyond visualizing the physical objects or the status you seek, you need to look within and say, "What kind of person do I need to become in order to get what I want?"
To become that person, you may need additional education or training in your field or another career; you may need to hire a coach or find a mentor to guide you through the steps to becoming who you want to be. Or you may require a character shift, to be reborn, in a sense. Lance Armstrong, for example, had never won a single Tour de France before he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Then it looked like his cycling career, and maybe even his life, were over. He fought back hard and won. Today he credits his great cycling success to the person he became as a result of having cancer. He says, "Cancer saved my life."
Tip No. 5: Accept that falling is a normal part of life, but try to fall forward every time--in the direction of your goal.
We are all continually creating our own destinies through the choices we make and our desire and determination to see them through. Perhaps you've suffered a major business defeat such as downsizing or termination. Realize that you can leave that job on good terms with a handshake and a letter of recommendation, or with the threat of a lawsuit against those who fired you. How you handle the crisis has a dramatic impact on how you will succeed from that point forward.
For example, early in his football coaching career, Lou Holtz was fired from his job at the University of Arkansas for no apparent reason. He could have sued, sulked or slandered. But instead, he shook hands and moved on, keeping the good friends he had there. From there, he went to the University of Minnesota. When his dream job at the University of Notre Dame job came open, Holtz' applied. Notre Dame started calling Holtz' past employers - including the University of Arkansas. Arkansas gave him a raving recommendation and Notre Dame hired him. Holtz finally got his dream job where he won several national championships. Had Holtz chosen to react negatively after being fired at Arkansas, he would have virtually guaranteed a bad performance review, which could have cost him his dream job at Notre Dame. How we react to bad things today has a huge impact on what happens to us tomorrow.
Like Lou Holtz, you can choose to fall in the direction of your next goal, deciding to treat the fall as a sort of awkward but valuable step along the path of your life and career. If, instead of dwelling on the circumstances of the past, you can manage to move on in a forward direction, your fall will send you in the direction of your goals.
Tip No. 6: "Retreat" does not equal "defeat."
A retreat can be a valuable opportunity to regroup and rethink strategies and goals. For example, one of the worst business mistakes you can make is to continue to pour money into a failing business; in this situation, knowing when to call it quits and creatively develop a better plan is essential.
Don't let pride keep you stuck in a wrong decision. Managers and investors need to be willing to change a course of action that isn't working, no matter how much faith, time, and money may have been put into it so far. You need to be willing to abandon a path that is not taking you where you want to go and start over again.

When 80% of his men were dead and his ship was sinking, he paddled a little john-boat over to another ship, took control of it, and soundly defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie.

In any painful, frightening situation, you need to realize that there is hope on the other side of the tragedy, even if you can't see it yet. When you quit, you guarantee that you will not be around to experience that which makes your suffering count for something. Turn your pain into a purpose.
If you persevere, you will gain wisdom and perspective and finally realize why you went through everything: namely, to become a new person, the person you needed to become in order to achieve the success you were seeking.

Many heroes of the past have blazed a trail for us to follow if we really want to overcome tragedies and failures. Remember, just because you may have failed does not mean you are a "failure." When I ask people to describe their ideal job, however, most people are far less clear. They may describe one or two attributes, like how much it pays, and/or the job title. That's it. If you were shopping for your ideal car, it would be easy to find because you could eliminate the thousands of cars that weren't a fit. You would focus exclusively on dealerships that offered the car that 'fit' you. It's the same with finding your ideal job...if you can't describe it, you won't find it. It's as simple as that.
Finding your Ideal Job requires a unique job search strategy. Focus and clarity are the first, and MOST IMPORTANT, pieces of this job search strategy. And, in my 15 years of experience (as an HR Manager, Hiring Manager, and Career Coach), most people get stuck here. The fact is, a clearly focused job search is much more successful than a broad one. Having a clear plan for the job you are after will result in a job weeks to months sooner than casting a 'broad net'.
Yet, many people still fear that by being clear and focused they are excluding themselves from other possibilities. The "but" I hear on a regular basis is "I don't want to limit myself". However, by being general and 'open' you create a problem for hiring managers: They Don't Know What You Want From Them and They Don't Know How They Could Use You!
And, as a result, you create a problem for yourself: you don't get interviews and you don't get hired! As a job seeker, your 'job' is not to 'find work'. Your job is to make it easy for work to find you! The easier you make it for a hiring manager to hire you, the better things will go. It's that simple. Hiring managers are busy. If you make their job easy in the interview process, they'll want you--yesterday!
As I've emphasized, the first step is to get clear. Get clear on what you want, what you won't live with out (non-negotiables), and what you bring to the table. You must also get clear of your self-limiting beliefs, thoughts, and actions. Let's start with 20 questions to get you clear on what your ideal job looks like.
WORK CONTENT: Describe work that excites, engages, and inspires you
1. What is the nature of your work?
2. What kinds of people, products, or services are you involved with?
3. What knowledge, skills, and experiences are you using regularly on the job?
4. In what ways are you growing, learning new knowledge, skills or abilities as a professional in your field?
5. What percentage of your work is new, challenging, energizing versus routine, boring, or "old hat"?
WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Describe the kinds of work relationships that motivate you, stretch you and bring out your best
6. What kinds of customers or clients do you serve?
7. What do you do in addition to serving customers or clients?
8. What is the leadership style of your direct boss?
9. What kinds of leadership or management activities are you involved in?
10. What type of co-workers are you working with? A team? Are you autonomous? Interdependent? Job sharing?
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Describe those work settings where you see yourself motivated, satisfied and performing at your best
11. What are the working days and hours?
12. Where are you working? Office, home, on the road, offsite, etc...
13. How are you learning and training for your position?
14. What is the career progression you see for yourself?
15. What is the overall mood or tone of the workplace?
REWARDS & RECOGNITION: Describe what makes you feel valued, keeps you contributing and confident
16. What income are you earning?
17. What kind of pay plan are you on? Salary? Hourly? Commission? Combination? Bonus?

I have seen way too many discouraged job seekers in recent years. And not just here at home, in Detroit, where the auto industry is truly shaken. Certainly the economy is troubling, but that's not the main reason I find job seekers are discouraged. I think the internet has created a 'monster' of a problem for job seekers.
The beauty of internet job search sites is that they give you instant access to a large list of opportunities. The ease factor is very appealing. You can upload your resume and pop your resume off to dozens of potential employers with a simple click of a button.
But the truth is, this gives job seekers a false sense of hope. After you hit 'send' what happens? Usually, nothing. And that's the problem. The fastest way to lose motivation and become discouraged is to hear absolutely...nothing.
The other problem I have with internet based job searches is that they cause people to jump into action and apply for a wide variety of things (many of which they are not even qualified for or interested in). This 'buffet o' jobs' causes applicants to become unfocused and generic.
Until you are absolutely clear about what your ideal job is and have positioned yourself to get it, you are going to struggle in this job market. Today's job market is competitive and you've got to have a game plan that'll get you noticed quickly.
There are good jobs to be had out there. And you can get one. But you've really got to step up and take control of your search. You simply can't afford to hide behind your computer and wait.
So, if you are truly committed to landing your ideal job, let's get busy! Here is your Dream Job To Do list:
1. PULL DOWN THE SHADES AND DO SOME HOUSEKEEPING
Undertaking a job search requires three things--clarity, focus, energy. And yet, most job seekers find all three in short supply! So, the first step is to do some internal (and, if necessary, external) housekeeping. Clear the mental cobwebs, clean up a few things that are draining your time and energy, and clear some space in your calendar so that you have consistent, focused time to work on your search each week.
2. GET CLEAR
Write out your ideal job description in as much detail as you can. This step is about looking inward at what you most want. It is NOT about looking at what's out there and trying to force fit yourself into something. Don't stop yourself with limiting beliefs like 'this job doesn't exist' or 'I'm not qualified'. Not yet. This is a time to get crystal clear about what it would take for you to really love your work. In the job market you can find just about anything. But, only to the extent you are clear about what works for you first. An unclear candidate usually gets unclear results (in my 12 years of hiring people, I NEVER hired someone for our best jobs who wasn't crystal clear about what they wanted, how the job I had available fit, and why they were qualified for it).
3. RESEARCH TO FIND A 'MODEL' JOB DESCRIPTION
This is the time to get on the computer (and probably one of the few times I'll recommend you spend any time on it). Take keywords from your ideal job description and type them into the online job search boards. Don't worry about location or anything else--you're not looking for jobs to apply for just yet. You are looking for 'model' job descriptions that align with your ideal job description. Once you have 3-5 sample descriptions that excite you, stop the research.
4. DEVELOP YOUR TOP 5 KEY MESSAGES
Scan the model job descriptions for themes, trends and key-words. What are the top 5 competencies they are looking for? How do you align with those? How do your talents, interests, experiences and strengths fit? What kind of transferable skills do you have? Use this information to create your top 5 key messages and then weave these into every piece of your job search strategy--your networking messages, your cover letter, your resume, your thank you letter, your interview responses. Position yourself as the ideal candidate for this type of job.
5. CHOOSE HIGH IMPACT SEARCH STRATEGIES
According to research (as noted by Richard Bolles's What Color is Your Parachute" ) the top 5 most effective job search strategies are:
  1. Ask for leads from friends, family, recruiters and associates. (33% success rate)
  2. Knock on doors of employers that interest you regardless of whether they have a posted vacancy (only about 40% of all available jobs get posted publicly anyway). (47% success rate)
  3. Call employers that interest you and find out if they are hiring for someone with your talents. (69% success rate)
  4. Work with a mastermind group or accountability group of other job hunters and apply some of these methods collectively. (84% success rate)
  5. Choose places where you want to work (based on your inner knowledge of who you are, what environment works best for you, and your research of companies who match that profile). Change Management Lessons About Employee Involvement

A wise person once told me I could never expect one hundred percent support from any individual who was not personally involved in devising a change which had an impact on his work. The wise person was right, and I’m really happy to have known him early in my career.
In any change, especially ones that affect a complete organization, it is impossible to involve every employee in each decision. Respondents to my change management questions over the years suggested, however, that when change works, the organization has gone out of its way to try employee involvement.

Employee Involvement for Effective Change Management

  • Create a plan for involving as many people as possible, as early as possible, in the change process.
  • Involve all stakeholders, process owners, and employees who will feel the impact of the changes, as much as possible, in the learning, planning, decisions, and implementation of the change. Often, in change management, a small group of employees learns important information about change and change management. If they fail to share the information with the rest of the employees, the remaining employees will have trouble catching up with the learning curve.

    If a small group makes the change management plans, employees affected by the decisions will not have had needed time to analyze, think about, and adjust to the new ideas. If you leave employees behind, at any stage of the process, you open the door in your change management process, for misunderstanding, resistance, and hurt.
  • Even if employees cannot affect the overall decision about change, involve each employee in meaningful decisions about their work unit and their work.
  • Build measurement systems into the change process that tell people when they are succeeding or failing. Provide consequences in either case. Employees who are positively working with the change need rewards and recognition. After allowing some time for employees to pass through the predictable stages of change, negative consequences for failure to adopt the changes, are needed.

    You cannot allow the nay-sayers to continue on their negative path forever; they sap your organization of time, energy, and focus, and eventually, affect the morale of the positive many. The key is to know, during your change management process, when to say, enough is enough.
Help employees feel as if they are involved in a change management process that is larger than themselves by taking these actions to effectively involve employees in change management.

Communication in Change Management

You cannot over-communicate when you are asking your organization to change. Every successful executive, who has led a change management effort, in my experience, makes this statement.
I have never worked with a client organization in which employees were completely happy with communication. Communication is one of the toughest issues in organizations. Effective communication requires four components interworking perfectly for “shared meaning,” my favorite definition of communication.
  • The individual sending the message must present the message clearly and in detail, and radiate integrity and authenticity.
  • The person receiving the message must decide to listen, ask questions for clarity, and trust the sender of the message.
  • The delivery method chosen must suit the circumstances and the needs of both the sender and the receiver.
  • The content of the message has to resonate and connect, on some level, with the already-held beliefs of the receiver.
With all of this going on in a communication, I think it’s a wonder that organizations ever do it well.
Change management practitioners have provided a broad range of suggestions about how to communicate well during any organizational changes.

Recommendations About Communication for Effective Change Management

Develop a written communication plan to ensure that all of the following occur within your change management process.
  • Communicate consistently, frequently, and through multiple channels, including speaking, writing, video, training, focus groups, bulletin boards, Intranets, and more about the change.
  • Communicate all that is known about the changes, as quickly as the information is available. (Make clear that your bias is toward instant communication, so some of the details may change at a later date. Tell people that your other choice is to hold all communication until you are positive about the decisions. This is disastrous in effective change management.
  • Provide significant amounts of time for people to ask questions, request clarification, and provide input. If you have been part of a scenario in which a leader presented changes, on overhead transparencies, to a large group, and then fled, you know what bad news this is for change integration.
  • Clearly communicate the vision, the mission, and the objectives of the change management effort. Help people to understand how these changes will affect them personally. (If you don’t help with this process, people will make up their own stories, usually more negative than the truth.)
  • Recognize that true communication is a “conversation.” It is two-way and real discussion must result. It cannot be just a presentation.
  • The change leaders or sponsors need to spend time conversing one-on-one or in small groups with the people who are expected to make the changes.
  • Communicate the reasons for the changes in such a way that people understand the context, the purpose, and the need. Practitioners have called this: “building a memorable, conceptual framework,” and “creating a theoretical framework to underpin the change.”
  • Provide answers to questions only if you know the answer. Leaders destroy their credibility when they provide incorrect information or appear to stumble or back-peddle, when providing an answer. It is much better to say you don’t know, and that you will try to find out.
  • Leaders need to listen. Avoid defensiveness, excuse-making, and answers that are given too quickly. Act with thoughtfulness.
  • Make leaders and change sponsors available, daily when possible, to mingle with others in the workplace.
  • Hold interactive workshops and forums in which all employees can explore the changes together, while learning more. Use training as a form of interactive communication and as an opportunity for people to safely explore new behaviors and ideas about change and change management. All levels of the organization must participate in the same sessions.
  • Communication should be proactive. If the rumor mill is already in action, the organization has waited too long to communicate.
  • Provide opportunities for people to network with each other, both formally and informally, to share ideas about change and change management.
  • Publicly review the measurements that are in place to chart progress in the change management and change efforts.
  • Publicize rewards and recognition for positive approaches and accomplishments in the changes and change management. Celebrate each small win publicly.
